As vice-president of General Electric Company with responsibility for public and employee relations, he developed an approach to labor relations that came to be called "Boulwarism." He was also a noted author and lecturer. John M. Okie papers. Though some private personal correspondence is housed in the collection, predominant is correspondence concerning various aspects of Forrest's finances; these are arranged by major investments or interests. | 11 | Title: Gatter, Carl W., compiler, Research Material on Ezra Pound, 1956-1967 Extent: 10 boxes Abstract: This collection contains very little original Pound material, although there are six folders of photocopied correspondence from him to various correspondents, primarily from the period when Pound was institutionalized at St. Elizabeth's Hospital. Correspondents include Pound's wife Dorothy and an early girlfriend Mary Moore. There are 22 folders of correspondence to Gatter relating to the early life of Ezra Pound. The balance of the collection comprises Gatter's research material on the life of Ezra Pound, including some printed material and photographs. | 12 | Title: Arthur Huff Fauset Papers, 1855-1983. Extent: 412 folders, 5 scrapbooks, and 1 portfolio in 32 boxes Abstract: The bulk of the papers pertains to Fauset's endeavors as a creative writer. Twenty-one boxes contain multiple drafts of unpublished novels, including one which is, in essence, an autobiography. Additional writings include addresses, essays, lectures; published and unpublished short stories; and multiple versions of his University of Pennsylvania dissertation, which was later published by the University Press under the title, Black Gods of the Metropolis. Correspondence derives mostly from the 1960s and 1970s and includes letters from Nellie R. Bright, his co-author on America: Red, White, Black, Yellow. | 13 | Title: Gilchrist, Family Papers, ca. 1823-1939 Extent: 2 boxes Abstract: A small but interesting collection of letters and the diaries of Grace Gilchrist Frend from 1907 to 1939. Family members include Anne Burrows Gilchrist, wife of Alexander Gilchrist and mother of Percy Carlyle Gilchrist (scientist/engineer), Beatrice Carwardine Gilchrist (physician who committed suicide), Herbert Harlakenden Gilchrist (painter who also committed suicide later in life), and Grace Gilchrist Frend (would-be singer). The family were intimates of Thomas Carlyle and many pre-Raphaelite painters. Anne was a champion of Walt Whitman; Alexander researched the life of William Blake (a posthumous publication compiled by Anne). Correspondents include European royalty, such as Empress Eugénie, Napoléon III, Empress Victoria, Frederick III, Queen Alexandra, Edward VII, and Isabella II, and/or their aides or secretaries, as well as the poet Stéphane Mallarmé, artists Henri-Louis Dupray (including his sketches) and Édouard Thierry, and Evans' wife Agnes. Other series comprise memorabilia (such as journals, notebooks, last will and testament, sketches, photographs, etc.) and diplomas and certificates awarded Evans. The earliest papers (1822) date from Bird's school days at Germantown Academy, and the very latest papers (1946) relate to C. Seymour Thompson's publication of Mary E. Bird's biography of her husband. Correspondents include men and women from Bird's career in medicine; his literary career; his theatrical career (including correspondence with Edwin Forrest, as well as the documentation regarding their legal battle over copyrights and profits); his political career; and his career in publishing and journalism. | 25 | Title: Musical Fund Society of Philadelphia Records, ca. 1820-1994 Extent: 126 boxes Abstract: Correspondence and business records of the Musical Fund Society of Philadelphia contain minutes of its earliest meetings; the membership, repertoire, and organization of its orchestra and chorus; information regarding financial relief afforded to its professional members and their families; programs and other materials related to the history of Musical Fund Hall (1848-1982); committee files; financial records; photographs of portraits painted by John Clarendon Darley, Thomas Sully, Rembrandt Peale, Charles Willson Peale, and others; and administrative records for the Musical Fund Society Foundation, a separate corporation formed in 1983. Also includes a portion of the Newland/Zeuner Collection comprised primarily of sheet music and scores, but also the account book, dated 1834-1868, of William A. Newland who purchased the music collection of composer Charles Zeuner in 1850. Also includes the will and other materials related to the estate of Gilbert Raynolds Combs (d. 1934), founder of the Combs Broad Street Conservatory of Music in Philadelphia (later Combs College of Music), and a past president of the Musical Fund Society.
